Bloodroot has been a food source from the Noongar Aboriginal people along the south and west coast of Western Australia. It was usually blended with other things and baked prior to consumption. It is said to have a taste like chlli or wasabi.

This perennial herbaceous plants produces a distinct black flower spike from a bright red bulk.  It grows  on the sands along the south and west coast of Western Australia from Geraldton to Esperance and inland to Kojonup. Flowers from October to January.  Likes white, grey or yellow sand, sandy clay.  Dry and seasonally wet site.

Used as a dye this plant is very versatile and the leaves, stem, seeds and bulkb can all be used.
