Understanding Aboriginal Art

by
JUDE MAYALL

After many years of working in a gallery that specialized in Aboriginal art the one question that I was constantly asked was where do I start to learn about this art form.  It was all so confusing, so many different styles from different areas and all the paintings with a story to tell.

The lectures I gave to many groups and also with the Council for Adult Education started people on this journey and the book that I've produced for my website will, hopefully, help others to understand this brilliant and interesting culture with such diversity in the artworks that are produced.

I don't come from an academic background, but rather my knowledge has come from working and touring with the artists, visiting their communities and listening to them telling me about their paintings.  I also have to add that the many "bushies" that I've got to know over the years who have spent a life-time in the desert and up north are so rich in their knowledge of the Outback, they have helped me understand so much more about another way of life that is unknown to those living in the cities.
