The Kimberley

In the Kimberley artists paint with a chalky rock called ochre. The work reflects the spiritual landscape showing specific areas of the countryside sacred to the artist.  Eg. Bungle Bungles  (Purnululu) a rocky outcrop in the Kimberley

The works can be viewed either from above (birds-eye view) or on the ground from a distance.  Foreground, middle ground and background are painted all the same size. Everything is equally important.

Different colours on the painting can depict different levels or types of ground ie rocky ground, flat ground, marshy ground etc.

The most famous artists from the Kimberley are: Rover Thomas (deceased), Queenie McKenzie (deceased), Jack Britten (deceased), Henry Wambiny (deceased), Beerbee Mungnari and Hector Jandany.
