Culture Or Art?

Art is a part of everyday life no matter how you look at it.   From a western aesthetic sense, the fact that we find something pleasing to the eye, that we want to exhibit it, doesn’t take anything away from the cultural aspect or for what it was originally intended.

It does reinforce the fact that art is such a general term that can define anything, from the way we present food on our plates to the design of our homes and the landscape of our cities.  Art is a creative force that is constantly changing and evolving, it represents the mood of the people at that time.

Drawing motifs in the sand, on the body for ceremony or cave walls was a way of communication for Aboriginal people.   It was a way of mapping the countryside, telling others where mountains, waterholes and food could be found.   The fact that it has been presented in such an interesting way ensures that the culture will not only survive but strengthen as more and more learn more about this “art-form” and become interested in the Dreamtime stories.

Australia has a small population, made up of many nationalities, living in a huge country.  The art and the culture of the original inhabitants of this country can help everyone living here understand more about the spirituality of this land and bind us together as a nation.
